Do you get migraines or experience TMD/TMJ?
How many events have you missed out on because of your painful symptoms? Do you dislike using medications to control your pain?
Both of these conditions are common and occur more frequently in women. What’s more, both migraines and TMD can often be related to dental issues that affect how the teeth, muscles and nerves in your face work together.
When a dental issue is involved, patients can find relief through medication-free treatment.
At Whitmore Dental, we help migraine sufferers find out if their condition could be caused by a treatable, dental problem. We work with our patients with TMD to improve the health of their jaw and bite.
Many of our patients have described these improvements as life-changing.
Tooth clenching and bite problems
While migraines and TMD can have various causes, there is a common cause that can contribute to both problems.
Migraine and TMD sufferers may clench their jaws or grind their teeth, a condition known as bruxism. They may also have bite problems – issues with how their teeth fit together and the force applied in various areas.
All that tension affects the health of your jaw as well as your trigeminal nerve – the major nerve controlling sensations in your face, and also involved in chewing and swallowing.
How Whitmore Dental can help you prevent migraines and TMD
In a previous blog, we talked about our approach to diagnosing bite problems. We’ll take a good look at your bite with a computerized T-1 scan, a high-tech scan that measures exactly how much force is happening in different areas of your bite, and that catches any problems.
Once we identify any causes related to your bite or other dental issues, we work with you to develop a treatment plan.
Orthotics and next-phase treatment –- immediate relief for your pain that’s medication-free
For many of our patients, short-term use of an orthotic can immediately put their pain to rest.
An orthotic is a horse-shoe shaped piece of plastic that is precisely designed to correct your bite issues. It’s designed to subtly blend with your smile.
With an orthotic, we address your bite issues, and take away the source of the nerve and muscle stress that underlies your headaches and TMD.
Some patients may simply wear the orthotic as the solution to their bite issues.
For others, we continue with a second phase of treatment, where we address issues with the bite through use of more permanent solutions, such as adding crowns or only-bonded porcelain.
